The Week of the Young Child
April 7 - 13, 2002

The Week of the Young Child is an annual celebration of early childhood and a tribute to all those people in our community who help teach and support young children. The theme for the Week of the Young Child 2002 is Children's Opportunities - Our Responsibilities. Today, we know more than ever before about the importance of children's earliest years in shaping their learning and development. The Week of the Young Child is a time to recognize that children's opportunities are our responsibilities and to recommit ourselves to ensuring that each and every child experiences the type of early environment (at home, at school, and in the community) that will promote their early learning.

In celebration of the Week of the Young Child, we are collaborating with the Cyert Center on an exhibition in the CMU University Center Gallery (close to the information desk in the University Center). The exhibit will open on Tuesday, April 2nd and continue through Saturday, April 13th. The Gallery hours are Tuesday 11am-5pm, Wednesday 11am-7pm, Thursday 11am-5pm, Friday 11am-5pm, and Saturday 12noon-3pm. Please make time to attend the exhibit with your child.

Pittsburgh is celebrating a whole month of the Young Child. See the attached list of opportunities and join us at the Family Fair at the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium on Saturday, April 27th from 11am 3pm. There will be many activities for children and parents!

Spring Carnival
April 18 - 21, 2002

Carnegie Mellon's Spring Carnival begins the evening of Thursday, April 18. The Spring Carnival is held in the Morewood Gardens Parking Lot (on Forbes Avenue between Morewood and S. Craig Street). It's a fun event for the whole family. There will not be school on Friday, April 19 because of the congestion caused by traffic and the closing of roads surrounding the Children's School during the buggy races.

Enrollment Update

As of today (March 28), we have 25 children enrolled in our morning three's program, 6 children in our afternoon three's program, 26 children in our morning four's program, 5 children in our afternoon four's program, and 18 children in our kindergarten program. We have 24 children enrolled in our extended morning and 5 children enrolled in the extended afternoon program.

Nature Camp 2002

We still have several spaces available for our Nature Camp in June. The dates for camp are June 3 to June 28, 2002. This year's theme is Earth Science, and it will include topics such as air, water, and light!

Please call the Children's School's office for a registration form.

TV-Turnoff Week

On average, children in the United States will spend more time in front of the television (1,023 hours) than in school this year (900 hours).

Forty percent of Americans frequently or always watch television during dinner.

April 22 to 28 marks National TV-Turnoff Week, whose aim is to demonstrate how rewarding life can be without the tube. Turning off the television gives us a chance to think, read, create, and do. It gives us the chance to connect with our families and engage in our communities. Join thousands of parents, teachers, pediatricians and other families by celebrating TV-Turnoff Week 2002.

If your family participates in this event, please let us know. We would love to hear about your experience!
