For Parents
Thank-You Notes
February 2007
Mrs. Jean Simpson

In December’s newsletter, I wrote about the words “please” and “thank you” and how they should be a part of your child’s everyday vocabulary.  In addition to saying thank you, children as young as 3 years old can send a thank you note in appreciation of a gift.  Explain to your child that you are going to write a note to thank the person for the gift.  Ask your child to dictate what they would like to say.  Prompt him/her with ideas, such as “where will you play with this game?”.  Have your child print his/her name if possible.  Your child may want to draw a picture of him/her with the gift.  As children grow and skills increase, they can begin to write their own notes.  We model the practice of writing thank you notes in the classroom by writing group thank you’s after special trips or programs.
