For Parents
Respect

Mrs. Jean Simpson

In a previous newsletter, I talked about teaching your children to respect others.  I would also like to add that children should be taught to respect their parents.  It’s important that children talk to their parents with respect.  They should respect your authority and listen the first time.  At the Children’s School, you will hear our teachers say to the children, “listen the first time”.  That doesn’t mean they obey blindly – but they learn that there are some important ‘school rules’ and consequences, especially related to respectful and safe behaviors.

Do not let your child speak rudely to you.  Reply immediately by simply saying, “You cannot talk to me that way.  Try saying that again in a kind way.” Acknowledge that he/she may be hurt or angry, and encourage him/her to discuss why in a respectful manner.  If you start this in the preschool years, your children will learn not only to treat you with respect, but others as well.
