Respect: to listen to, to heed, to hold in high regard, to esteem
“Respect your elders”. This is what adults taught when I was a child. Miss Manners (Judith Martin) doesn’t like this advice because it implies all adults are worthy of respect. Instead, she urges parents to teach their children to treat adults with respect. I would go one step further and say we need to teach our children to also treat their friends, pets and their possessions with respect. How do we teach respect? As adults we need to model the attitude of respect. We need to show respect to other adults. We should also show respect to our children. We can do that be listening to them and giving them our full attention when they are talking. Watch the television shows your children are watching. Are the characters treating others with respect? Then decide if this is a show you want your children to watch. Teach your children respect by asking them to pick up trash you may find at the park. Instilling respect in your child is an important task in raising a well mannered child! |
