For Parents
Fruit Group
December 2006
Mrs. Jean Simpson

The fruit group is the red triangle on the food pyramid.  Any fruit or 100% fruit juice counts as part of the fruit group.  Fruits may be fresh, canned, frozen, or dried, and may be whole, cut-up, or pureed.  Here are some tips to help you add more fruit to your diet:
•Keep a bowl of whole fruit on your table or kitchen counter.
•Cut fruit, such as watermelon and cantaloupe, to keep in refrigerator for easy access.
•Buy fruit that is in season.
•Offer raisins or other dried fruits instead of candy.
•Use applesauce as a fat-free substitute for some of the oil when baking cakes.
