Preparing for a Teacher Education Masters Program

Funding Options for Graduate School

Internships and Student Teaching

Full-year internships in a local school offered by some graduate programs are sometimes paid positions. Typically, the school district where the internship takes place provides the stipend. (See the University of Pittsburgh's MAT Program for an example.) A temporary or intern certificate may be required. Check with the college and the state department of education for the prerequisites, such as testing, required to receive the appropriate temporary certificate.

Certificate and graduate programs that require a one semester student teaching experience are rarely (if ever) paid positions.

Forgivable Loans

These loans are repaid by working in geographic or academic subject areas that are experiencing shortages of teachers. Typically, teaching positions in these areas are not guaranteed and if a teaching position is not available at the time of graduation, the loan must be repaid monetarily. Forgivable loans are granted by individual states.
