Sharon Carver, Ph.D., is beginning her sixteenth year as the Director of the Children's School.  She earned an A.B. in Psychology and a K-12 Teaching Certificate at Princeton University and then a Ph.D. in child development at Carnegie Mellon.  She taught in the Graduate School of Education and the Department of Psychology at the University of Rochester for five years before returning to Carnegie Mellon.  Since coming to the Children's School, Sharon has worked with staff and parents to strengthen the school's program, improve the facilities, and build strong connections with the university.  In 2004, Dr. Carver was promoted to full teaching professor.  She teaches undergraduate courses in Child Development as well as offering a practicum program at the Children’s School.  She serves on the board of the National Association of Laboratory Schools (NALS) and the Pittsburgh Association for the Education of Young Children (PAEYC).  At the graduate level, she teaches a course in educational design.  Sharon’s husband, Dave, is pastor of Crafton Heights Presbyterian Church and her daughter Ariel is a junior majoring in equestrian studies at Wilson College in Chambersburg, PA.

Jean Veltri Simpson, the Assistant Director of the Children's School, grew up in Pleasant Hills. Jean received a B.S. in Elementary Education from Edinboro University and an Early Childhood certification from Chatham College.  She then earned a Masters in Elementary Education from Chatham College.  This is Jean’s thirtieth year at the Children’s School, where she initially served in dual roles as a teacher and as an administrative assistant.  Jean is active in her church in Pleasant Hills and, along with belonging to a weekly small group Bible study, she also serves on the Women’s Ministry Program committee.  Jean enjoys baking, going to the movies, reading, and taking long walks with her husband, Keith, who works for an environmental consulting firm, and their dog, Yankee.

Annie Smith is a native of Pittsburgh, spending her childhood and adolescence attending Montour School District.  This is Annie’s second year at the Children’s School as the Administrative Coordinator.  As an undergraduate student at West Virginia University, she received her Bachelors of Arts in Psychology in 2000 and started working as a therapist for children with autism.  Annie spent two years as a one-on-one therapist before she made a move to New York City. She worked as an assistant teacher in the three-year old room for two years and a lead teacher in the two-year old room for one year at Scarborough Children’s Center.  This is where she decided to continue her studies in Early Childhood Education.  Annie began Fordham University for her Masters in Early Childhood, but moved back to Pittsburgh and will be finishing her Masters in late 2008 at Carlow University.  Annie and her husband, Danny, enjoy spending time outdoors with their dog, Boots, who they adopted from the Animal Rescue League.  They enjoy hockey games and reading, as well as spending time helping other animals in need.
