Admission FAQ
GRE:
The institution code for CMU is 2074. Any of the psychology codes will work for the department (e.g., 2002, 2006, 2009, 2015, 2016). We do not require the GRE Psychology subject test.
Test of Spoken English Requirement:
Foreign students who are non-native speakers of English are required to take the Test of Spoken English, administered by TOEFL Programs and Services, in order to be reviewed for admission into the Psychology Graduate Program at Carnegie Mellon. The institution code for CMU is 2074. The psychology code for the department is 08.
QPA/GRE Cut Offs:
Our program is extremely competitive however; we do not have "cut-offs" for QPA or GRE scores. Students entering our program generally receive GRE scores from 600-800 on both the math and verbal components, writing GRE scores of 4+, and a GPA of 3.7+. The reason we do not have "cut-offs" is because we know that there are many other factors involved including your academic background (e.g., the school you attended, the classes you have taken), and whether or not you've had research experience and/or publications. The extent to which your research interests match those of faculty members is also a very significant part of the admissions decision. With this in mind, you may wish to contact faculty members directly to determine whether they are accepting graduate students in the following year and whether your research interests overlap with theirs.
Transcripts:
One official copy of transcripts from each university/ college attended.
Letters Of Recommendation:
Here are a few pointers on using the online letter of recommendation feature.
1. You must complete and submit the online application. So that the system will email the recommender.
2. The recommender will receive an email from our system with instructions on how to complete and submit the letter online.
3. The recommender will receive an on screen acknowledgement confirming the letter was submitted successfully.
Our program will still accept letters of recommendation mailed directly to our psychology department:

Graduate Program:
The Department of Psychology at Carnegie Mellon University offers an intense, challenging and exciting training program leading to the Ph.D. degree. The faculty include many of the world's leading researchers in cognitive psychology, cognitive neuroscience, developmental psychology, and social-personality psychology. The goal of the graduate program is to produce independent, creative and insightful scientists capable of using analytical and empirical methods to advance basic knowledge.
The department encourages applications from students with strong backgrounds, not only in psychology, but also in related disciplines such as the biological and natural sciences, mathematics and engineering. The program emphasizes rigorous application of experimental, mathematical and computational tools to the analysis of behavior.
Carnegie Mellon has a strong tradition of interdisciplinary research. It is easy for students to take courses or engage in research with people from departments of Computer Science, Statistics, Social and Decision Sciences, English, Philosophy and the Graduate School of Industrial Administration (GSIA). In addition, students take courses and interact with research faculty at the University of Pittsburgh, particularly in the departments of Behavioral Neurosciences and Psychology as well as with the faculty at the Learning Research and Development Center (LRDC) and Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic (WPIC).
