Comprehending a passage of text is especially difficult because many words do  not convey the
same meaning in different contexts ( e.g., BANK).  The goal of my research is to understand how
context can serve to disambiguate a word's meaning and guide the comprehension process.  In
particular, I am interested in understanding how orthographic, contextual, and semantic mappings
and representations might serve in resolving a correct interpretation of a passage of text via conjoint
computational/connectionist and behavioural experimentation. Advisor:

I am currently working on studies of social perception development. Using fMRI and eye tracking,
I explore how young children improve in their abilities to identify and understand others. I am
particularly interested in theory of mind, biological motion, joint attention, and the dysfunction in
social cognition seen in autism.

I am interested in the development of categorization and social cognition in infancy, and in particular
how these areas contribute to infants' knowledge of animacy. My current research focuses on how
infants begin to identify goal-directed action and how they learn that nonhuman animates are
goal-directed entities.

I am pursuing a joint degree in Psychology and Behavioral Decision Research.
I currently work on research that explores various topics involving emotion and cognition.
I study when, how, and why people decide to give their resources away during acts of generosity.
I am also interested in the affective antecedents of spending decisions.

I am interested in how long-term and working memory interact with each other and with other
processes, particularly in the context of problem-solving. I use a variety of methods to investigate
this question, including ERP, fMRI, and cognitive modeling. My focus is broad, and I'm more
interested in how different cognitive processes interact than in the details of any particular process.

My two main research interests are mental representations and language.  Currently, my supervisor
Dr. Jay McClelland and I are working on a neural network model of graded mental representations
where input from different modalities is gradually integrated into increasingly conjunctive
representations.

organization of the specific brain regions that support these processes emerge? How are these
mechanisms disrupted in individuals with brain damage?Advisor:

I am interested in second language acquisition, particularly issues of transference from the primary
language to the second language and they way the two influence each other. Currently, I am looking
into the extent to which native Japanese speakers can be trained to differentiate between /r/ and /l/
and their ability to generalize this discrimination beyond the training context.

I am interested in early childhood science learning, and in particular how science education can
develop children's reasoning skills and approaches to learning, such as curiosity. My research has
focused on using children's exploration in different contexts as a way of measuring curiosity. As a
more general interest, I would like to investigate the impact of science-based curricula on at-risk
children's school readiness.Advisor: Klahr

I am interested in the way in which second languages are acquired, more specifically whether L2
syntactic structures can be truly mastered in a meaningful way. In order to investigate this, I also
am interested in the question of optimal practice scheduling and other related learning process
questions, such as Competition Model predictions of task difficulty, explicit vs. implicit instruction,
and to what extent individual difference plays a role in this mastery. Currently, my research takes
place in French courses at CMU and Pitt, through the PSLC LearnLab.

I am interested in the internal representations that individuals form of people with whom they share
close relationships, and how these representations affect perceptions of themselves, others, and
relationship events.  Attachment theory suggests that these cognitive representations are particularly
influential during times when individuals need and/or provide support, and I am specifically interested
in the impact of perceptions on support outcomes. I am interested in exploring cognitive
representations and perceptions in at least two ways: (1) understanding and defining the nature of
the representations, and (2) observing the impact of the representations on dynamic interactions in
close relationships.

I am interested in strategy selection during problem solving. More specifically, I study the factors
that influence whether people choose to solve math problems with or without the aid of technology,

gain insight into the process by which people succeed (and sometimes fail) in optimizing their
performance.Advisor:

My research interests focus primarily on the neural mechanisms of human vision. I am especially
interested in conducting research that will broaden the understanding of the neural mechanisms
behind the two main visual pathways that guide vision for action and vision for perception.
I currently focus on research that explores possible interactions between those two systems.
