Although
their interests are diverse, faculty of the Psychology Department share
common
approaches
to research. They aim to describe the psychological processes and biological
mechanisms
that underlie behavior. They use rigorous and innovative methodology. They
work
on issues that are theoretically important and that have potential applications.
This
approach
has led to honors such as appointments to the National Academy of Sciences
and
formal awards from major psychological and scientific societies. Members
of the
Department
hold numerous positions as fellows of professional societies and play a
role in
their
governance, and they provide extensive service to scientific journals and
to agencies
and
foundations that sponsor research.
Teaching
in the department demonstrates that renowned researchers make outstanding
instructors.
The members have authored some of the outstanding textbooks in the field,
and
their research is prominently featured in others. Students are taught about
Psychology
not only through conventional courses but through hands-on involvement
in
research
projects under faculty supervision.
