Research Interests:

I’m interested in the duality of human cognition that allows us to both respond to the environment and direct our actions towards achieving our goals. I investigate this delicate balance between external and internal constraints using cognitive architectures, particularly ACT-R, and their role in expressing what I call Expectation-Driven Cognition (EDC). EDC models this duality by allowing the agent to react to the mismatch between the world and the agent’s expectations. An agent’s expectations are either predictions about the state of the world (in which case the agent reacts to the environment) or they represent the agent’s intentions (in which case the agent tries to achieves its goals). I work closely with the Robotics Institute to allow models of EDC to be used in robotics as they perform tasks in the external world.
