Dear Students, Independent research is a pivotal feature of the undergraduate experience at Carnegie Mellon. We are fortunate to have a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute that will provide hourly wages for you to engage in an independent research project. Our ultimate goal is to raise your professional trajectory in a STEM career (Science-Technology-Engineering-Math). Preference is given to projects related to Biological or Biomedical science in some way, but many students have been funded with non-Biological projects as well. Your first step is to contact a prospective research advisor to discuss possible research projects in his/her lab. We can support you to conduct research in labs at Carnegie Mellon, the University of Pittsburgh, Hillman Cancer Center, Allegheny Hospital, the Carnegie Museum, and many other sites in the area. We are now accepting applications for Spring 2010 student research positions. The application deadline is Wednesday, January 5, 2011, and we will notify award recipients by Monday, January 10, 2011. Yes, applications are competitive, but we do not look only at your GPA. You may not receive academic credit for your paid research hours. Late applications will be considered as long as funds are available. Please apply online through our website http://www.cmu.edu/bio/hhmi/academic_researcher/index.html (The website will soon be updated with the Spring deadline information, but you can apply now.) Feel free to contact your academic advisor or me if you have any questions. Best wishes, Aaron P. Mitchell, Ph.D. Professor, Biological Sciences Director, HHMI Undergraduate Science Education Program
