The 85-121, How Children Learn Math Forum is an interactive web site where we will be posting messages, most notably discussion questions, for the class to access. In addition to the discussion questions, other important information will be posted here from time to time, so be sure to check the Forum on a regular basis. Below you will find general guidelines for using the site. If you would like more information, please contact Dr. Siegler's secretary, Theresa Treasure, at tt2p@andrew.cmu.edu, and she will be happy to help you.

1. Click on this link: http://121forum.activeboard.com to access the Forum. Bookmark the page for easy retrieval later.

2. Next, key in the login name and password in the "Members Login" box at the top right of the page. The login name and password are the same for all class members. The login name is "psyforum" and the password is "forum". (Do not key in the quotation marks, by the way, just the numbers and words, and be sure to use lower case letters.)

3. Once you have logged in, you can access the list of topics by clicking on "85-121 How Children Learn Math" (which is the first class listed in the white area under the light blue bar which has the word "Main" at the left-hand margin). When you click here, the window will change, and a list of topics will appear.

4. To read the posts, simply click on the topic you want to read and it will appear. If you want to print the posts out, you can use your browser's print command for posts that are less than one page long. For longer posts, you will need to copy and paste the post into a Word document, and then print the Word document out.

5. To create a post, click on "Start A New Topic" which is at the right side of the page between the two pink bars, with "Calendar" above and "Last Post" below.

When you click on "Start a New Topic", the window will change again, and a white "New Topic" area will appear. Key in the topic name in the bright white bar beneath the word "Topic".

Topic names should follow this format: Discussion Questions for date of the class in which the discussion questions will be used. For example, if Theresa, Dr. Siegler's secretary, was posting study questions for the first reading from National Mathematics Advisory Panel report, which will be covered in the October 2 class, the title for her post would be something like this: Discussion Questions for 10-02.

Discussion questions should be posted at least a week before the class in which they will be used.

You can enter the discusion questions directly into the large, bright white box beneath the formatting icons or you can key them into a Word document and then copy and paste them into the above-mentioned box. Our Forum has the capabilities to format your post any way you would like. If you have questions about how to use these settings, contact Theresa (tt2p@andrew.cmu.edu).

After you have entered your questions into the topic box, click the "Show Preview" link just below the box (and under "Use Advanced Editor") to see how your questions will look once they are posted. You can then make any changes you would like to them. Once you are happy with how they look, click the "Submit Post" button at the bottom of the page, and your questions will be posted to the list. The screen will now go back to the window with the list of topics and you should see your topic listed at the top of the list. If your topic is not on the list, it has not been posted and you will need to do your post again.

6. Once you are done, log out of the Forum by clicking the "Log Out" link in the top right corner of the page.

If the Forum is Down

Please keep in mind that occasionally we have power outages, work done to the server, and other occurrances that hinder access to the Forum. In situations like these, frequently you, the hard-working, diligent student, are the first to discover the problem. So, if you run into any technical difficulties at all with the forum, the first thing to do is to call the Psychology Computer Support Group at extension 8-2800, Monday through Fridays, from 8:30 to 4:45 pm, and let them know what the problem is. You can also email them at psycomp@andrew.cmu.edu. They will be glad to assist you, and should be able to tell you when the forum will be back on line. Next, you can send an email, which includes your posting for the forum, to Theresa at tt2p@andrew.cmu.edu, and let her know about the problem. Theresa will email your study questions, etc., to the entire class. Theresa is usually in the office on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9:30 am to 4:45 pm. Hence it is receommended that you post your study questions sooner rather than later so that if there is a technical problem with the Forum, the questions can be distributed in a timely manner anyway.
