What happens when I visit the lab?
You will be with your child ALL the time. The studies are very simple but fun:
Your child will watch a computer display or listen to sounds paired with blinking lights for a few minutes.

Where are you located?
We are situated on the CMU campus in the Margaret Morrison Building. If you agree to take part, you will be sent directions to the lab, and one of our lab co-ordinators will provide you with directions over the phone.
Click here if you would like to see directions on-line.

How long does a visit usually last?
A visit to the lab lasts 30 minutes or so, and we do our best to make it fun for you and for your baby.

How many sessions will I have to participate in when asked to bring my child?
Each study only requires one session for approximately 30 minutes.

How do I get involved?
If you are interested in having your baby take part, please call (412) 268-5257.
You can also email us. Click here to send us an email.

When are appointments scheduled?
We are able to schedule during any available slots between 9 AM to 5 PM Monday to Friday.

Will the data collected from my baby during our visit be kept confidential?
Yes. After your visit, your baby's name will be replaced with a number. During sessions that have to be videotaped, the tapes will be kept in a locked room to which only trained experimenters have access. Also, no reference will be made to individuals in oral or written reports that could link individuals to the study.

Who makes sure that your studies are ethical?
Every one of our studies has been reviewed by Carnegie Mellon's Institutional Review Board. This panel, consisting of University and community members, evaluate proposed studies involving human participants at least once a year. The panel also handles comments or complaints about the studies. If you have any questions about your child's rights as a subject in this study, contact the IRB Chair, c/o Regulatory Compliance Office, 414 Warner Hall, Pittsburgh, PA 15213.  Alternatively, please feel free to e-mail irb-review@cmu.edu.

Can I bring along my other children to the study?
Absolutely! Another trained experimenter will gladly look after them during your visit. Next to the room where we hold our studies, we have a room filled with toys where your other children can play with the trained experimenter. If you have other children you would like to bring, please let us know in advance when you make an appointment.
