The Infant Language and Learning Lab invites parents of 6- to 24-month-old infants to participate in research on how babies learn.  We are located on the campus of Carnegie Mellon University, in Margaret Morrison Hall.  You can see directions here.

In the first few years of life, infants learn at an amazing rate.  We try to understand how these little people are able to learn so much, so fast.  In particular, we focus on how infants learn to communicate by seeing what they can learn about language and music.  Selected references can be viewed by clicking here.

In every study, you will be with your child at all times.  Visits are simple, but fun, and usually take about 30 minutes.  In all of our studies, infants sit on their parent’s lap.  Speakers in the room play language or music, while the infant looks at blinking lights, or sees new objects on a computer screen.  We let the infants tell us what they are interested in by how long they are willing to look.  By seeing what interests infants, we can understand what they are able to learn, and what they are still trying to discover.
